Blanket season is upon us and we want to help you finish off the season. If the blanket is wet because of snow or rain, hang over fence to dry before putting it back on your horse. Once dry, brush off any muds that may have adheared. Try to also scrape off any manure that may have collected on butt bands or under tail flap. Once winter ends, do not just throw the blankets in a pile and wait till the next season before cleaning. The season and manure and urine are at work to ruine those costly clothes your horse owns. Let us check them over for repairs and get them back to you so you can be ready when the following season sneaks up on us!

When your partner damages their clothing and it is still too cold to take the blanket off:

If you see a tear that is small and un-imposing, you can easily put a "bandaid" on it with a stick on or iron on patch. Larger tears may require a more severe repair which could involve duct tape! Pay particular attention that tears that are "fixed" temporarily with duct tape could certainly leave tape residue when removed, along with also possibly tearing the material of the blanket when pulled off for a more permanent repair.

Do keep in mind that tears that "show" the interior fiber fill of the blanket will only deteriorate without immediate repair. Not only this, continued use by the horse in his stall and pasture will surely see shavings become part of the fiber fill which are difficult if not impossible to remove. Those shavings can cause irritations down the road because they are impossible to remove. The best solution is to repair immediately, if not, fiber fill will need replacing to "cut out" fill that has shavings attached.

If your horse has found a way to have it's belly straps or leg straps removed or ripped off...... use either elastic leg straps to temporarily replace the missing hardware, snap clasp closures or at the very least, twine to adhere your horses straps in place until proper replacement tailoring can be performed. Do NOT add additional holes to the garment as this will entail greater repairs down the road.

Front closure snaps or clasps that are broken or missing can easily be replaced with snaps purchased at TSC or other local tack type stores. You can utilize those closures that look like key ring type snaps temporarily. Whenever hardware is missing.....ideally you need to have your horses' wardrobe cleaned and properly repaired for the safest possible scenario.

Severe mud should be scraped off so as not to become embedded in the fabric and create permanent stains. Take care to also scrape off excessive manure that may become embedded on a "butt" strap or on tail flaps. If the blanket is wet or damp - hang to dry before redressing your horse in the garment. Do not dry in the sun as it fades coloring along with destroying fabric. In addition, unwanted birds may fly over head leaving droppings on the blankets unknowingly.

No matter what..... NEVER place a blanket in a dryer to dry a fresh washed garment. With todays modern fabrics, the heat from the dryer will shrink not only the blanket but because there are plastic properties in the bindings, the heat will curl the bindings or melt them.
